A Chance Encounter That Became a Creative Friendship
Sometimes the most meaningful connections begin in the most unexpected places.
I first met Carol Steffgen thousands of miles from home while traveling through Ubud, Bali.
Ironically, we had already crossed paths without realizing it. I noticed Carol and her husband, Rick, while we were waiting to board our flight at LAX, and once aboard we ended up seated just one row apart for the journey to Indonesia. At the time, we were simply strangers sharing a flight.
It wasn't until the second day of the trip that fate had other plans.
I was enjoying lunch at Taco Cartel on Monkey Forest Way when Carol and Rick happened to walk past. Carol stopped, smiled, and said, *"Hey! I saw you on our flight."*
That simple greeting sparked a conversation that quickly led to an unexpected discovery.
We were both artists.
What began as a chance encounter in the heart of Bali has grown into a wonderful friendship built around creativity, curiosity, and a shared appreciation for art. It's one of those reminders that you never know where a single conversation might lead.
Celebrating Carol's Creative Journey
This month, Bee+Hive Artist Collective is proud to recognize Carol Steffgen as our August Featured Artist.
Carol's work reflects a thoughtful creative practice rooted in observation, exploration, and a genuine curiosity about the world around her. She approaches art with both technical skill and a willingness to continually grow, qualities that resonate deeply with our community.
Recently, we had the opportunity to encourage Carol to share her story beyond the studio by introducing her to VoyageLA Magazine, a publication dedicated to highlighting creatives, entrepreneurs, and remarkable individuals throughout Southern California.
Like many artists, Carol wasn't actively seeking publicity. Sometimes it simply takes someone believing in your work enough to say, "You should do this."
She said yes.

From the Hive
Every artist we feature becomes part of the Bee+Hive story, but Carol's story feels especially meaningful because it reminds me how unexpectedly community can begin.
Before there was a conversation, before there was a friendship, before there was a Featured Artist spotlight, there was simply a shared flight to Bali and two artists who didn't yet know they had anything in common.
It would have been easy for our paths to end there.
Instead, a chance encounter outside Taco Cartel on Monkey Forest Way changed everything.
When Carol recognized me from our flight and stopped to say hello, neither of us could have imagined where that brief conversation would lead. We discovered a shared passion for art, stayed connected long after returning home, and over time that connection grew into a genuine friendship.
Looking back, I often think about how many opportunities in life begin exactly this way.
Not through elaborate plans.
Not through networking events.
But through simple human connection.
That moment in Ubud has become a quiet reminder of why Bee+Hive Artist Collective exists. Every exhibition, every Hive Night, every workshop, every introduction is built on the belief that artists flourish when they know one another. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer another artist isn't advice or critique. It's simply an introduction, an opportunity, or the confidence to take the next step.
Recommending Carol for VoyageLA felt like a natural extension of that philosophy. Her work deserved to be seen, and her story deserved to be heard. Watching her embrace that opportunity and share her journey has been just as rewarding as watching her art continue to evolve.
Community isn't measured by the number of members we have.
It's measured by the relationships we build, the encouragement we offer, and the doors we open for one another.
Thank you, Carol, for saying hello that afternoon in Ubud. Bee+Hive Artist Collective is richer because our paths crossed, and I have no doubt there are many more wonderful chapters still to come.
